RELATED LITERATURE


Mnemonics are a way to help students remember vocabulary more easily and effectively. This method draws visual images or letter combinations (Amiryuosefi and Ketabi, S, 2011). According to (Solso, 1995) mnemonic is a learning strategy to improve memory that involves students in connecting new information, mnemonic is a technique either verbally or visually, this serves to increase the storage of new information contained in memory. There are many mnemonic approaches that have long been used to teach vocabulary, namely the keyword method (Atkinson, 1975). This method is very effective in helping participants to remember the words they have learned.

The keyword method is one of the mnemonic techniques. According to Atkinson  and Rough (1975), the keyword method is a mnemonic procedure for associating a foreign word with its translation. When using keyword strategies there are several that must be considered, namely using 3R: Reconstructing, relating, and retrieve (Mastropiere, 1988).
